Any ideas on how we can get our motion-sickened, seven-month-old Australian Shepherd-Hound puppy from Rhode Island to our new home in Florida? It's a 22-hour drive, we plan to make it a two-day trip. We have five weeks to figure it out!How can we move our motion-sickened puppy to our new home? You can get meds from the vet to help. How can we move our motion-sickened puppy to our new home?
There's these cool seats that hook only a seat and fasten in with the seatbelt. Then you use your dog's collar to fasten them in.
I'm not sure how the seat works, but my dog had the same problem and it had something to do with him being able to see outside and not getting scared.
You know, actually being able to see that they were moving, not just the weird sensation. How can we move our motion-sickened puppy to our new home?I had the same problem with 2 of my dogs... contact the vet they have medicine that you can give them. My vet actually suggested Dramamine for mine (I can't remember the dosage though) It knocked them out and we had a smooth trip! Best of luck!
solve this with lots of stops along the way and doggy sleep drugs. You can get shots from your vet that will act as an anesthetic but not put your dog in any harm.
An alternative to the shot is that if your dog is small, the motion sickness only manifests itself in the form of puke and doesn't hurt the puppy. In which case, plastic wrap the car seat and put that puppy in a crate to confine the mess. Also, clean it up immediately so that the dog doesn't try to ingest the puke. How can we move our motion-sickened puppy to our new home?Go to the vet and ask him about maybe a motion sickness medicine for your puppy. Ask your vet for medication.
If you contact your local vet they will most likely give you Dramamine to help you move your puppy. The Dramamine will knock your pup out for a while to help make your trip less stressful on the dog. Most likely they will suggest bringing the dog in so they can determine the dosage to give him to help him on your 2 day trip. Good luck! How can we move our motion-sickened puppy to our new home?
lol...that should be one interesting trip hehe :) ok...first, get a kennel..preferably not the wire kind but kind they use on planes. Make it small enough so that he only has room to be comfy when standing, sitting, laying...not enough room to get up and walk around from one end of the crate to the other.
2nd - you can use the medicine people use for motion sickness to help your dogs problem....however you must first check with your vet for proper dosage per pooches weight. I also think they have a doggie version out now, not sure.
3rd - GET HIM USED TO THE CAR.....NOW. lol. I know when your moving any added issues is big time stress, but if you could spend time desensitizing him before the trip, THAT is what will help you the most.
Step....
1. Get him used to getting in/out of car %26amp; sitting in it for a few minutes without engine running. After he seems fairly calm move to...
2. Calmly get him in the car and start the engine, don't drive anywhere...just let it iddle for a bit. Don't pamper or "coo" him especially if he's fearful as this is simply saying "good boy for being scared %26amp; sick". Be matter of fact but gentle.
3. After he's settled down on that part drive him slowly around the block, then extend the length %26amp; duration.
4. Always make the car "FUN" if he has a favorite chew toy, doll, ball, blanky, etc. bring it with you.
Wish you the best on the trip......sure wish I were moving to FL!!!!! lol.
go to the vet (with or without him/her) and get a MILD sedative for the puppy. That way the puppy is asleep before the ride
since you have five weeks, talk with your vet about testing the medicine to see how well it works and whatnot
your veterinarian will also have some more advice for you
good luck!
Some dogs grow out of motion sickness. If you have 5 weeks...I would just start taking him on short rides every day. Let him get accustomed to riding in the car, the movements, and the sounds. If you have someone sit with him the entire trip to calm, reassure, and entertain him he might just forget where he's at. Keep his favorite toys near him. If you think it's safe to give him treats (without him vomiting) you could praise him for doing so good. Also, you should plan for much more then 22 hours driving. You have to make alot of stops for dogs and even more for a motion sick one I'm sure. You should probably "dog proof" your car. I had one that had motion sickness and it's no fun to clean up. Especially on long trips.

They sell car-sickness medicines for animals. Stop by your local pet store or vet and see what they have. If the dog gets really stressed out, your vet can give you sedatives, but the car-sickness pills should probably do the trick.
my dog was the same way!
usally the dogs get motion sickness because they arent used to riding in cars
so, ride around in ur car for extended periods of time with ur dog like first just 15 min. then 30 min. and so on make sure (when ur driving 2 let ur dog go out once in awhile)
and also with this get some medicine from ur vet or even just some from the local petsmart should help
hope this helps!
Since it is such a long drive, it would be good to get some sleeping medicine for your dog from the vet whether he gets sick from car rides or not. My friend did this just recently for her cat and it worked very well.
Also since you have five weeks, take your dog in the car more often. When my dog was a puppy he used to vomit in the car from motion sickness but we simply kept putting newspaper down and taking him in the car to get used to it. Now he LOVES going for a ride and we take him on 3-1/2 hour trips to our lake house and he is fine - just don't forget to stop for a potty break!
I have a dog that has motion sickness. I get motion sickness easily so I can relate. First, I recommend talking to the vet and find the medicine that works for your puppy. And like some of the other people said, get him used to the car ride. Try driving without "stop and go" as much as possible and eliminating stimulus would help. I once got pulled over by a cop because I was trying sooooo hard not to get my baby(dog) throw up. I didn't get points though... Oh, don't forget lots and lots of paper towels! Good luck!
My vet gave me Ace..mild sedative. Was great for my dog and he was still alert enough to go potty .
i had to fly from boston back to atlanta with a 6 week old puppy who got motion sickness so our vet told us to drug with some diaramphine or however you spell it so even now she weighes 11 pounds and i cut the pill in half and feed it to her and she's fine she just sits there and looks at me without puking everywhere
