I guess the other thing you can do is us photo-shop later to take out any props for flipping the puppet if you don't feel like the wire is worth the effort.

Here's a quick additional thought. If your set is small then you can rotate it so that the back wall is down and your camera is above (like a rostrum camera). Now you can simply rest the puppet on the backdrop and rotate them around to do the back flip.
