What happens to the motion of a particle as a wave passes through a medum?

annnd how is the motion of the particle like the motion of a mass on a srping? What happens to the motion of a particle as a wave passes through a medum? It oscillates, centered around an equilibrium position, such that the wave is carried as energy and information, but the particles remain stationary.

A mass on a spring oscillates centered about an equilibrium position, but the mass on a spring is an oscillation, and doesn't carry energy or information beyond the mass spring system, if it is constrained by an idealized support.
