What does th term "red shift" refer to and what does it tell us about the motion of other galaxies relative to the earth? How can we tell the light from other galaxies is red-shifted?What does th term "red shift" refer to and what does it tell us about the motion of other galaxies?"red shift" refers to the seemingly red appearance of objects moving away from a point, (objects coming closer to a point appear blue) this is due to the proportional increase in its wavelength. When looking at galaxies, if, when detecting its electromagnetic radiation outside the spectrum of visible light, they appear red (in some cases a deeper red than others) this then indicates that the galaxies are moving away from the original point. Theoretically, the universe was derived from one point in time and space, and ever since, it has been expanding outwards into an unknown, unlimited expanse.What does th term "red shift" refer to and what does it tell us about the motion of other galaxies?Red shift is when an object is moving further away.



For example,

If a galaxy has the greatest red shift, it is moving further away and therefore, it is moving away fastest.
