How do you keep your cat from setting off motion sensor alarms at night?

I want to get a cat. What type of motion detector are you referring to and why do yo need it. If it is to turn on lights outside, is simple, keep the cat inside. But if you are referring to a whole house alarm the cat should not bother it unless he/she open the doors and windows. Which is very unlikely a can could do that.
