What do you do when someone shakes your hand without the up and down motion?

I've bumped into a fair deal of people who choose to just grip your hand instead of actually shaking it. Is this a normal greeting? I always end up trying to shake their hand just out of habit and I feel like I am forcing their hand into the shaking motion. It's especially awkward when they have a firm grip without the up and down. Extend your hand to them first and just before they go to grab it, quickly raise the thumb of your extended hand to your nose and wiggle the remaining fingers.
